Northwest Vietnam Tour 7 Days
Vietnam’s northwestern regions remain largely unaffected by external influences. People visiting the area will be rewarded with scenery that’s considered the most beautiful in the country. Visit places like the famous battlegrounds of Dien Bien Phu and the former French Sapa hill station, all soaring with history. Experience travelling through high snake roads and rich valleys, gaze upon breathtaking rice fields and meet the unique traditional markets of many ethnic minorities.
Day 1: Hanoi - Mai Chau (L, D)
Meet you at your hotel and depart at 8am. There has been an upgrade on the highway 6 road to Hoa Binh from Hanoi. Enjoy the beautiful scenery full of pagodas, churches and villages. Visit the Muong people on the way, then another stop at the Thung Khe Pass to admire the amazing Mai Chau valley view.
Lunch break in Mai Chau. Enjoy trekking during the afternoon along the Song Ma River, away from tourists. This is a unique chance to experience the valley’s beauty and the amazing culture of the Thai minority residing in the area. Share dinner and spend the night with a local Thai family.
Day 2: Mai Chau - Son La (B, L, D)
Share breakfast with your Thai hosts before setting off for your road trip to Son La up north. Enjoy amazingly picturesque background on the way. Lots of photo opportunities and the chance to view the H’mong and Black Thai people in their villages.
Have lunch on the way, at a beautiful local restaurant. Your day’s high point will be your visit to a tea plantation situated in a Moc Chau valet. This is the finest tea-growing region in Vietnam, on the sides of the hills and by the roads. Destination at Son La will be reached in the afternoon. You will have dinner and spend the night in Son La.
Day 3: Son La - Dien Bien (B, L, D)
On this day you will have the chance to extend your travel on more amazing roads, longer passes and meet new stunning ethnic minorities. Your desire to stop frequently for photos and talk with the locals about their habits and traditions will continue to be high.
Following lunch, we will drive towards the amazing pass of Pha Din, to admire its greatness. Pha Din pass sits 1, 000 meters (3, 280ft) above level of the sea. Local legends maintain that Pha Din means the conjunction of Earth with Heaven. Ascending and descending the slopes, full of steep gorges and numerous bends, is something you will never forget. Our destination, Dien Bien Phu, will be reached in the early afternoon. There you will visit the historical fields of the French/Vietnamese war for the rest of the day. You will also see Dien Bien Phu Museum and A1. Have dinner and spend the night in Dien Bien Phu.
Day 4: Dien Bien - Lai Chau (B, L, D)
Have breakfast and enjoy your free time, before we set of for our next amazing road trip, along the breathtaking gorges and the Nam Na River. We will stop at the ZDao and H’mong villages en-route. In early afternoon, we will reach Lai Chau. Lunch there and the rest of the afternoon is free for relaxation in the town of Lai Chau. Have dinner and spend the night here.
Day 5: Lai Chau - Sapa (B, L, D)
Today’s road trip is the highpoint of the day. Although the road is not in perfect condition, the breathtaking background of the ravenous valley, tall mountains and primeval rivers will compensate you – textbook themes of photography. Driving to Sapa stretches over a 25-mile road that goes through the ChinCo and Tram Son passes; the latter is the highest pass in the country, overviewing the Fansipan Peak, also known as “the roof of Indochine”. Along the way you will come across places of immense beauty, such as the Silver Waterfall and Heaven’s Gate.
Situated in the extraordinary valley bordering China, Sapa is the most visited place in Vietnam’s northwest. It was founded in 1922 and served as a hill station for the French. Today, Sapa is a prime destination for trekkers, owing to its amazing routes for trekking, breathtaking rice fields, unique ethnic minorities and, of course, mount Fansipan’s back drop. Reaching a height of 3, 143 meters (10, 311ft), it is the highest peak in Vietnam.
The destination of Sapa will be reached in the afternoon. You are free to explore all you like for the rest of the day. Have dinner at Sapa and spend the night there.
Note: There is a beautiful market in Tam Duong, taking place on Sundays, which is a very interesting sight, full of several minority groups. On this day we will visit the market on the way.
Day 6: Sapa (B, L)
Following breakfast at your hotel, we will set off for a promising day of trekking down to the valley of Muong Ha – the best trekking route in the country. You will walk along a dirt path separately from tourists, through pine trees, rice fields and H’mong villages. Have a picnic lunch at the river shore and visit a H’mong school. In the afternoon, trekking will continue through Zay village and end at Ta Van Bridge, where the driver will pick you up and return you to Sapa. In the evening you can relax at the hotel, where you can have dinner.
Day 7: Sapa - Hanoi (B)
Early wake-up call for breakfast and then we leave Sapa for the long, but satisfying journey back to Hanoi. Several stops are scheduled en route, to increase the trip’s interest factor. Observe how the scenery changes from the mountain tops to the flatness of the Red River Delta. We will reach Hanoi late in the afternoon.
